Crackdown On Christian Television Programming?

May 7, 2014 – It’s been one week since the Gospel community caught wind of BET’s decision to cancel Celebration of Gospel after enjoying a recording breaking 2.6 million viewers during its premiere broadcast in April 2014.  Now, Christian viewers are experiencing yet another blow on a different front.

USA Today reports that HGTV has decided to cancel the real estate reality show “Flip It Forward” before it has even started.  Why?  Well, the powers that be at HGTV have not publicly explained their reasons for pulling the show.  Sound familiar? According to USA Today, the concept of the show features twin brothers David and Jason Benham who have been flipping houses for profit for the last 10 years. The brother would now help families buy the home they thought they could never afford — kind of like a smaller scale, and more personal Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Each episode, the Benham brothers would find a fixer-upper and “transform it into their forever home — with a healthy dose of sibling rivalry between the brothers along the way,” said HGTV in an April statement.

But Wednesday with a tweet, the network quietly announced that they would not be moving on with the show.

The Benham brothers are known for their outspoken faith in Jesus Christ, which has drawn the ire of LGBT organizations who have labeled the brothers as anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-divorce and anti-Muslim extremists.  While HGTV gave no official reason for their decision, the show was canceled on the heels of the Benham brothers being branded by the LGBT organizations.

As of 7:30am, the Benham brothers released this statement:

The first and last thought on our minds as we begin and end each day is; have we shined Christ’s light today? Our faith is the fundamental calling in our lives, and the centerpiece of who we are. As Christians we are called to love our fellow man. Anyone who suggests that we hate homosexuals or people of other faiths is either misinformed or lying. Over the last decade, we’ve sold thousands of homes with the guiding principle of producing value and breathing life into each family that has crossed our path, and we do not, nor will we ever discriminate against people who do not share our views.”

The brother also said:

We were saddened to hear HGTV’s decision. With all of the grotesque things that can be seen and heard on television today you would think there would be room for two twin brothers who are faithful to our families, committed to biblical principles, and dedicated professionals. If our faith costs us a television show then so be it.”

With the cancellation of BET’s Celebration of Gospel and now HGTV’s Flip It Forward, one cannot help but to think if the mainstream media is cracking down on Christian programming in all its forms.  There’s no real way to know at this juncture, but at the very least, it definitely worth thinking about.
