You Can Begin Again
Psalm 51: 1-2 (NKJV)
1Have mercy upon me, O God
According to Your lovingkindness;
According to the multitude of Your tender mercies,
Blot out my transgressions.
2Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin.
Walking the Christian journey is not an easy task, and, like everyday life, it is possible to “mess up”—whether the mistakes are intentional or unintentional ones. One of the most beloved characters in the Bible—David, of David and Goliath fame, and a man after God’s own heart (1 Sam. 13:14b), found himself on the wrong side of the path of God when he not only committed adultery with another man’s wife but, after finding out that she was pregnant, also had her husband killed, then married her quickly in order to cover up his sin (2 Sam. 11). In fact, he was so entrenched in his own plot, he himself may have even thought that he got away with it! It took an intervention from God through the prophet Nathan for David to come to himself and to repent; hence, his writing of Psalm 51, and of the verses above. But, after all that had happened, could he begin again and have a brand new start? Absolutely yes! Upon David’s asking for forgiveness, God gave David a second chance—and He can do the same with you and I! Through our acceptance of Jesus Christ, the door is always open for us to be washed clean of sins from our past, and to start over with a fresh slate—as long as we are sincere in our repentance and do not take God’s grace for granted (aka always repenting, never changing). It also does not mean that we will be totally exempt from the results of our sin [(ex: David’s punishment—God did not allow David’s newborn son to survive—see 2 Sam. 12:15b-23)]. However, it’s still okay—because now, like flopping down on a bed with crisp, fresh sheets after drying off from a nice shower, we can stretch out, relax, and EXHALE—and maybe get a cry out, because guess what? It’s all gonna be all right, because God has forgiven you and I—and we can begin again! Talk about a now and a wow praise—we’ve got the victory!
See you next week!
